If you’ve ever worked as a contractor, you’ll know the pain of juggling multiple Microsoft Teams accounts. One day you’re logged in with your client’s tenant, the next day with a subcontractor account, and of course your own work account.

But what happens when one of those accounts gets disabled?

That’s when frustration really kicks in.

The Problem

Here’s the scenario:

You’ve added multiple accounts to Microsoft Teams on your Android phone.
Some of those accounts (e.g., subcontractor or client accounts) get disabled after the project ends.
You want to remove those accounts from Teams without affecting your other accounts.

After some investigation, I found out that the user’s usage location was not configured to the correct country. The user was on located to Portugal, the phone number we wanted to associate is +31, which corresponds to the Netherlands.

Whether you’re participating in an online meeting, sending a direct chat message, or posting in a team channel, following these best practices can help you communicate effectively and more professionally.

Be punctual for virtual meetings. Just as you would arrive on time for an in-person meeting, make sure you are ready to join the virtual meeting on time. Log in a few minutes early to ensure your equipment is working properly and to allow time for any technical difficulties. Nothing so frustrating as “do you hear me?” Or “wait my headset is empty”.

TIP: set your default setting for meeting to 50 or 55 minutes instead of the full hour. This will give you some proper time to get prepared for the next meeting.

After testing for some months with the public preview of the new Microsoft Teams client it’s finally announced (march 27, 2023) for public preview (FYI, at least for Windows only right now).

So, what’s new? The most obvious is a redesign, but there’s a lot more going on underneath the hood. Teams has been rebuilt using different coding languages that have made the app much more efficient. Microsoft says that the new Teams app is loading 2X faster, enables you to join meetings 2X faster and is using 50% less memory.

When configuring Direct Routing you will need to setup 3 FQDNs for signaling.

Microsoft Teams - Direct Routing Root Certificates Update

On May 12, 2025, the current root certificate “Baltimore CyberTrust Root” expires. This certificate now handles the encryption of Microsoft Teams but also Azure Communication Services and even still the old Skype for Business Online components.

The transition to the new root certificates has started by Microsoft in January 2022 and will be completed this month, October 2022. In case you are using Direct Routing with your Microsoft 365 tenant you probaly have uploaded the Baltimore CyberTrust Root certificate in to your SBC.

For my job i’m working with a lot of customers that have been onboarded within in the Microsoft Cloud Solutions Provider program (CSP).

From this point of view it’s easy to manage multiple tenants securely without having to manage all kind of admin identities for each customer.

Microsoft Teams has a new update that enables users to create a chat with themselves. This update (Feature ID 88066) has been rolled out to desktop, web and mobile users.

If you don’t see it yet, log off and on to the Teams client and it probaly shows up in your pinned chats.

Microsoft highlights that the new chat with self feature is designed to help users stay organized. Just like regular chats, you will be able to send yourself messages, notes, files, images, and videos. The feature could be useful for creating drafts to capture quick ideas/reminders and prevent users from accidentally sending incomplete messages.

Microsoft has released version 4.5.0 of the Teams PowerShell Module.

Microsoft Teams PowerShell Module (TPM) versions in the 4.x.x series or later are the only versions supported now. All earlier versions are fully retired since June 15, 2022 & will stop working (Message center post for reference - MC350371).

It’s recommended to update to the latest Teams PowerShell Module version.

Update your module by the following cmdlet:

In order to help these customers with their migration to Microsoft Teams, Microsoft has launched the Teams SIP Gateway. This is a cloud service that enables core Teams calling functionality on compatible SIP phone models from Cisco, Poly, Yealink and AudioCodes.

In September 2021 Microsoft enrolled a new feature called “Spam Call Noticiations”

The spam call notification feature automatically evaluates incoming calls and identifies probable spam calls as “spam likely” in the call toast. Direct Routing keeps sending Anonymous

Problem

While i was configuring an Audiocdes SBC with Direct Routing setup and started testing, we faced the issue that every call outgoing is presenting Anonymous as caller ID.

When looking up the SDP invite i saw the parameter Privacy showing up.

Solution

After some digging, i found that the Privacy ID is added automatically when you enable the option -forwardPAI $true (P-Asserted-Identity) within the Set-CsOnlinePSTNGateway cmdlet.

Because i don’t want to remove the PAI, i created the following manipulation rule in the Audiocodes SBC to remove the Privacy ID. Action Subject:

With tags, you can categorize people based on attributes, such as role, project, skill, training, or location. For example, a “Project member” or “Manager” or Customer (guests)" tag will enable you to reach groups of people in Teams without having to type every single name.

Recently we have decomissioned our Microsoft Cloud Connector Edition and migrated most of our telephony users to Microsoft Teams with Direct Routing. One big issue we faced was that when a external caller called us by PSTN, they only heard one RingBack tone followed by deadly silence till someone picked up or landed in Azure VoiceMail.

When you install Microsoft Teams and start to use it for as your default calling app you want Teams to open when you click on TEL: URLs on homepages.

A TEL: URL is in the E.164 format tel: ie. tel:+31205001500(not my number, its the dutch Microsoft number) and when you click on that Teams should open and you will be able to call that number without copying the number or type it manual in your Teams.

Yesterday (July 30, 2019) Microsoft announced the retirement date of Skype for Business Online. Skype for Business Online will be retired on July 31, 2021, at which point access to the service will discontinue.

Until this date customers of Skype for Business Online can expect no change in the service up to its retirement date.

What are priority notifications?

This feature allows a user to mark a chat message in Teams as “Urgent”. What’s happening?

More and more organisations are starting explore Microsoft Teams, and in doing this it’s important to understand the interopability options while running in coexistence (Skype for Business Online and Microsoft Teams next to each other).

Like all other vendors, backward compatibility is always difficult ;-) Teams is in this case no exception.

First of all, if your tenant was created before november 2018 you are probally running in Islands mode. You can check this by going to the Teams Admin Portal.

Teams delivers chat-based collaboration, calling, meetings, and with live events, so you can expand the audience of your meetings. Teams live events is an extension of Teams meetings, enabling users to broadcast video and meeting content to a large online audience. These are meant for one-to-many communications where the host of the event is leading the interactions and audience participation is primarily to view the content shared by host. The attendees can watch the live or recorded event in Yammer, Teams, and/or Microsoft Stream, and can interact with the presenters using moderated Q & A or a Yammer conversation.

Sending Audio Messages

You are now able to record and send audio messages on the Teams mobile clients. It works for both chat and channel conversations. Web and desktop clients will also support listening of the received audio clips.

Audio message support has been a top customer ask since the early days of the product. (Link to uservoice)

Create a Team based on a template.

In Microsoft Teams go to “Join or create a team”.

Select “Create team”

Click “Create a team using an existing team as a template”.

Now select your base template that you want to copy.

Changing your presence from the Teams Desktop Client

Last week Microsoft released the a small but in my opinion a fundamental feature that i was using many times a day in Skype for Business.

It’s now possible to change your presence status from either the system tray menu or buttons below the Aero thumbnail and changing the presence from the menu (via profile picture) also still exists.

Microsoft Teams administrator roles

Microsoft has created four new roles specifically for admins responsible for Microsoft Teams. Roles give people in your organization permission to do specific tasks in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

This new admin roles are now available to assign in your Microsoft 365 admin center or by using PowerShell.

Teams service admin

Can manage all aspects of Microsoft Teams except license assignment. This includes policies for calling, messaging, and meetings; use of call analytics tools to troubleshoot telephony issues, and management of users and their telephony settings.

Background blur: In Teams users can blur the background so focus on what matters most.
Meeting recording: Meetings are no longer just a point in time experience. With meeting recording in Teams, you or other invitees who missed the meeting can playback recorded audio, video and content at any time. Pull up a transcript, powered by Microsoft Stream, and search for keywords so you can optimize your time while getting caught up.
Cloud video interop – Bring your existing room technology investments into Teams. Through partner offerings from Polycom, BlueJeans and Pexip, a full portfolio of legacy devices can now be full-fledged audio/video participants in Teams meetings with content sharing. Polycom’s CVI offering is available now, with Pexip and BlueJeans generally available by end of October.

Do you recognize the situation that you have a Team in Microsoft Teams and members of the team keep sending you emails instead of using the chat and collaboration functions in Teams?

You can now move your email conversation including the attachments to your Teams channel and continue the conversation in your Teams channel.

Let’s move your conversation to Teams channel

In the Teams client while selecting the channel where you want to port your conversation to you can click on the … now select “Get email address”

Anonymous Meeting Join in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft has released the Anonymous Join feature for Teams Meetings. You can use this feature by the following procedure.

Create and join a scheduled or adhoc meeting

Copy the meeting join information, you can do this by opening the meeting after creating.
Launch either Edge (In-Private) or Chrome (Incognito) _ // Firefox and Safari are not supported yet_
Paste the meeting join URL into the address bar
When prompted, use the web client to join the meeting anonymously

The Command Bar–Microsoft Teams

Microsoft is releasing a new feature for the Teams client, the Command Bar. This feature allows you to quickly navigate the Teams client using shortcut commands that can be entered into the Search/Command Bar.

Some examples you can use:

Search for people, files and messages.

Change your status using - /busy, /away, /dnd
Look up a recent file and open the file using /files
Look up someone’s org using **/org **
Navigate to a channel using /goto
Call a person using **/call **
Try out other /commands

If you’ve got a Skype for Business Audio Conferencing license, you’re now able to dial out to your own phone number from a current meeting. This allows you to transfer meeting audio to your phone if you’re having network problems, need to get in the car or on a slow connection.

Click the “i” icon on top of the right screen.

Here you can type in your own phone number.

Microsoft recently(11-2017) released the Powershell Cmdlets (still in beta), which gives you the opportunity to manage Microsoft Teams by Powershell.

Installing

To get started you wil first need to install the Microsoft Teams Powershell module. You can do this by using the following command:

    Install-Module -Name MicrosoftTeams

Loading module

Once you have installed a module on your system, you will likely want to import the module in order to use it. Importing is the process that loads the module into active memory, so that a user can access that module in their PowerShell session. You can use the following cmdlet te import the MicrosoftTeams module.

Microsoft has released Guest Access for Microsoft Teams, but Microsoft Teams guest access is a tenant-level setting and is turned off by default, so i will show you how to turn this on.

Turn on Guest Access on tenant level

What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a relative new tool in the Office 365 suite. Teams is combining Office 365 Apps in one tool to facilitate collaboration and communication for groups or you probably can guess, teams.
