Microsoft shipped a lot in and around June 2026 for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Most of it won’t change your day, but a handful of updates are worth knowing about, especially if you’re the one fielding questions from users or managing the admin side. Here’s what actually matters.
Copilot Cowork is now generally available worldwide
The biggest item this month: Copilot Cowork, Microsoft’s agentic system that plans, executes, and delivers finished work instead of a draft, is now GA worldwide.
A few things worth knowing:
- It returns finished work, not suggestions. You define the task, Cowork executes it end to end, and you get a completed deliverable back.
- It’s grounded via Work IQ, so it pulls from the systems your organization already runs on rather than generating generic output.
- Chat and Cowork now live side by side in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, there’s a toggle to switch between “ask a question” mode and “get this done” mode.
- Billing is usage-based, so if you’re an admin, this is one to watch on cost (more on that below).
Alongside GA, Cowork picked up several capabilities in June:
- Model choice, Cowork can auto-select the right model per task (GPT 5.5 for research and citations, Anthropic models for visual work like PowerPoint), or you can pick manually. Rolled out to the Frontier program in June.
- Expanded plugins, new connectors for Adobe, Canva, Miro, monday.com, Harvey, LSEG, Moody’s, Morningstar, S&P Global Energy, and TeamsMaestro, plus full Microsoft Fabric and Dynamics 365 support. Databricks is available via sideloading.
- Custom skills, users can build and manage their own reusable instructions in the Customize tab, and combine them with org-wide or partner-provided skills.
- Visual creation, Cowork can now generate and edit deck graphics, document imagery, and email visuals in-flow, using branded PowerPoint templates so output starts on-brand.
- Edge and mobile, Cowork works inside the Edge browser (rolling out to Frontier) and on iOS/Android with mobile continuity, so you can start a task on one device and pick it up on another. Push notifications cover approvals, input requests, and completions.
Bottom line: if you haven’t tried Cowork yet, this is the month to. It’s no longer a preview feature, it’s the default agentic entry point.
Claude Sonnet 5 is in Microsoft 365 Copilot
Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 5 is now available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot, starting with Copilot Cowork and Copilot in PowerPoint for document, spreadsheet, and presentation tasks.
This isn’t just a backend swap, it’s part of a broader multi-model push:
- Model choice in Copilot in Word also shipped in June, letting users pick Anthropic models specifically for rewriting, summarizing, and restructuring content.
- Admins control access based on org policy, and availability can vary by region and tenant, so don’t expect it everywhere at once.
If your organization has been asking “can we choose which AI model handles our work,” the answer is now yes in more places than before, and it’s admin-governed, not a free-for-all.
Agents worth knowing about
A few named agents either launched or hit general availability:
- Planner Agent, now available in Microsoft 365 Copilot. Delivers interactive task cards, lets you create and update tasks in plain language, and can build structured plans with goals and buckets from a single prompt.
- Sales Agent, GA, conversational access to CRM data (opportunities, contacts, past conversations) combined with Microsoft 365 context like email and calendar, working consistently across Outlook, Teams, and Dynamics 365. Admins control which environments and users get access.
- Learning Agent, GA, personalized, in-the-flow upskilling powered by Work IQ and AI Skills Navigator (preview). Delivers tips, skill assessments, certifications, and roleplay practice tailored to each person’s role.
- Researcher model and mode choice, when you add the Researcher agent to a Copilot chat, you can now pick the model (GPT, Claude, or Model Council for both) and control research depth directly in the conversation.
If you’re rolling out agents to a team, Sales Agent and Learning Agent are the two safest bets right now, both are GA, not preview.
Admin and governance updates
For the people managing tenants rather than just using Copilot, this batch is the one to bookmark:
- Cost Management Dashboard, a centralized place to activate, manage, and cap spend on usage-based AI experiences like Copilot Cowork. You can allocate Copilot Credits by group, choose between prepaid and pay-as-you-go billing, and set hard caps and alerts. Given Cowork’s usage-based billing, set this up before adoption spikes, not after.
- Team-level cost reporting in Insights, gives team leads (five+ direct reports) visibility into their own team’s Copilot Credit usage, without needing full admin access. Rolling out in July.
- Organization Prompts in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, admins can publish approved prompts that surface directly in Copilot Chat’s suggestions and the Prompt Gallery. Useful for nudging users toward good prompting habits instead of leaving it to trial and error.
- Agent Metrics for custom reporting, lets analysts in Viva Insights build custom queries combining agent usage data with organizational context, instead of relying on predefined dashboards. Public preview in July, GA in September.
- Purview DLP and Copilot controls, DLP can now restrict external emails from being surfaced by Copilot, and new Purview controls apply specifically to Copilot Cowork.
If you’re responsible for Copilot rollout at your organization, the Cost Management Dashboard is the one to set up first, usage-based billing without limits is how surprise invoices happen.
Smaller updates that still matter
Not headline features, but the kind of thing that removes daily friction:
- Deep Citations, citations now link to the specific section of a source file instead of the whole document, for Word and PowerPoint files (Meetings, Web, and PDF references coming soon).
- Regenerate in Copilot Chat, a “Try Again” or “Switch Model” option on your last prompt, without retyping it.
- Vision in Microsoft 365 Copilot, show Copilot what’s on your screen or in front of your camera instead of describing it; rolling out in July.
- Copilot Notebooks, now supports Outlook email references and is available to Copilot Chat users, not just licensed Copilot users. Email references roll out in July.
- Copilot Catchup in Word, a quick recap card of what changed in a document since you last opened it.
- Skills and personalization in Excel and PowerPoint, reusable custom skills, standing formatting/naming preferences, and workbook-specific “.Rules” sheets that travel with a file so everyone editing it follows the same conventions.
Why this matters
The pattern this month is consistency: Cowork going GA, multi-model choice spreading across apps, and a real cost/governance layer catching up to the agentic features. If you’ve been holding off on Copilot Cowork because it felt half-finished, June is the point where that’s no longer a good excuse, but pair the rollout with the Cost Management Dashboard so usage-based billing doesn’t catch you off guard.
